Torrey Path announced today that it has joined Accelrys Inc’s (Nasdaq: ACCL) Independent Software Vendors (ISV) alliance program. As a member of the program, Torrey Path will sell applications for delivery of and reporting on biological data that use Accelrys’ industry leading Pipeline Pilot software platform.

“We chose to integrate with Pipeline Pilot specifically because we feel it is one of the best ways to handle the volume and sequential processing needs of our gene expression content,” said Peter Dresslar, Torrey Path Founder and CEO. “We think the future is bright for biodata and bioinformatics solutions built on the Pipeline Pilot platform, because trends in the industry make the platform increasingly appropriate for biological research computing.”

“Torrey Path is using Pipeline Pilot in exciting new ways to make gene expression data more accessible to life scientists of all kinds,” said Frank Brown, Vice President and Chief Science Officer of Accelrys. “We are pleased to have them join the community of Pipeline Pilot developers.”

Torrey Path has already developed a solution for integrating and reporting on customers’ in-house gene expression data called Gene Expression Reports for Pipeline Pilot. This solution includes statistical pre-processing and characterization with key related biological terminology. Gene Expression Reports for Pipeline Pilot can also be used to work with and integrate the expert-curated gene expression data from existing Torrey Path Content Packs.

Information about the Accelrys ISV program can be found at: http://accelrys.com/company/strategic-alliances/independent-software-vendors.html.

Torrey Path also announced today that Dr. Sirimon O-Charoen, Senior Research Scientist, will present at Accelrys’ European User Group Conference. Dr. O-Charoen will discuss findings in eye disease made analyzing Torrey Path’s Eye Content Pack and using Pipeline Pilot. “Using Pipeline Pilot to Mine Value-added Data from Public Gene Expression Repositories” will be held as part of the conference’s Biology Track on Thursday, October 15th, 2009.

About Torrey Path:

(Reprinted from the 2009 San Diego Software Industry Council annual whitepaper: online at http://www.sdsic.org.)

At Torrey Path, a dominant feature that we see in our industry is the scale of the data involved. Most disciplines in life sciences are highly observational, and there is a lot to observe. Established scanning technologies, such as gene expression microarrays, can easily generate gigabytes of data, and new technologies like next-generation sequencing or functional MRI can produce data on the terabyte scale and beyond. Great new analytics are being developed and applied to making sense of all of the data being produced; some of them locally in San Diego. However, due to the scale and complexity of the data being generated, we continue to see a growing disconnection between the data analyses and the life sciences researchers who are trying to use these data to generate new knowledge. That’s where Torrey Path comes in.

Torrey Path is focused on assembling experimental biological data along with basic, supporting knowledge, and then running biostatistical analyses in bulk across all of the data. Processing just a few experiments this way can take days, so for many analytical techniques it makes economic sense to do it only once at our data center, rather than having our customers do that processing repeatedly and on an ad hoc basis. Other techniques might be more sensitive to end-user input, but even in these cases our customers can benefit from knowing what experiments and what samples might make the most sense to start with. We’ve invested heavily in the processing pipeline, making it so we can add new types of data and new analytical techniques at various points in the process.

The quantity of data we are handling turns out to have not just a numerical effect on the processor times and storage capacities, but an even stronger, qualitative effect on the value chain of analytics and transforming raw data into consumable, sustainable knowledge resources.

Torrey Path is pleased to announce the scheduled release of three new content packs for 2009: Metabolic Content Pack, Cardiovascular Content Pack, and Neurology Content Pack. Content Packs are deep dives into microarray data in specific therapeutic areas. They provide hand-annotated experimental data, discipline-specific controlled vocabulary groups, and a variety of pre-computed biostatistical data. Content Packs plug into Torrey Path’s Core Platform, adding to the built-in knowledge base from which biologists and clinicians perform insightful, rapid analysis and meta-analysis.

“Our previous Content Packs have already realized rapid uptake in the pharmaceutical industry, and we’re excited to bring these new products to market,” said CEO, Peter Dresslar. “The Content Packs have been very popular for us, as they give our customers direct access to the knowledge locked within gene expression data in ways that weren’t sustainable or even available before.”

Senior Research Scientist Dr. Sirimon O-Charoen added, “As we expand, we are applying deeper and more formal methods for analysis and quality control. Our process includes a proprietary in-house application for content development, which allows us to curate the information much more efficiently.”

Metabolic Content Pack, Cardiovascular Content Pack, and Neurology Content Pack will be released in the second and third quarters of 2009. Torrey Path’s Eye Content Pack was released earlier in 2008 and was immediately recognized as a game-changing tool for scientists and clinicians in ophthalmology. The previously-announced Immunology Content Pack is under development now. All Content Packs will work within the customer’s environment when loaded onto Torrey Path’s Core Platform software.
